Apparently, I do not know (or did not know) what a Magnolia bud looks like, as that furry part looks very much like a cat's ear! Cool shot .. and you're right on with 'moody' .. very cool and great lighting technique!

I used to love tossing the cones (like hand grenades - pull the pin) and using the leaves as "knives" in mock swordfights with my brothers. What a great tree. Thanks for the memories.

HAha, I was trying and trying to figure out what sort of animal had this ear and what sort of animal had the tongue. When I read your description there was a loud What? to be heard. Good one.

I had a feeling no would get what this shot was of, : ) so I knew I had to title it properly : )
I had the idea to try and capture the texture difference of the fuzzy odd looking bud pod <-(?)against the actual magnolia bud.
